Channel 4's decision to axe Big Brother after 2010 will not surprise devotees. This year's series, which has been won by Sophie Reade, struggled in the ratings. It averaged around 2m viewers.

Just 3m tuned in to see the glamour model from Cheshire crowned winner, the lowest rating Big Brother finale in the history of the series. Even the much-maligned Big Brother 9 (won by 'nice' Rachel Rice) managed just over 5m viewers.

Ironically, the launch for Big Brother 8, a series not regarded too fondly by fans, peaked with an audience of nearly 8m; a stark contrast to Big Brother 10's figures.

It wasn't that long ago when the show dominated the tabloids and celeb rags. Take the 'poolgate' saga involving Big Brother 6 winner Anthony Hutton and Makosi Musambasi, for example. The row over whether they had sex in the pool or not made headlines for at least a week after his win. This time around? Barely any interest. It's official - Big Brother 10 flopped.
