A wedding. Guaranteed to ramp up the ratings for a soap, irrespective of the unwritten rule that anything and everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. Viewers know this, but still tune in.

EastEnders' Garry Hobbs and Dawn Swan are the latest couple to tease the audience with their will they/won't they shenanigans. Y'see, Garry found out that his bride had been having a bit of 'ow's yer father? with Phil Mitchell and the wedding was off.

However, love found a way and the bride and groom reconciled before sailing off into the sunset. A happy (if rather implausible) ending in EastEnders for once.

Fans have been treated to a wide variety of weddings over the years: from modest registry office dos (Jonny and Paul in Emmerdale) to indulgent, extravagant affairs (Liam and Maria's in Coronation Street). Never underestimate the popularity of a soap wedding: nearly 20 million viewers watched Enders' Peggy Mitchell and Frank Butcher say 'I do', only a million more than the number that saw Neighbours' Scott and Charlene tie the knot.
