Top 10 EastEnders Moments

Anita Dobson as Angie and Leslie Grantham as Den in EastEnders (Image © BBC)
Den v Angie - There were so many great episodes involving this pairing. On 16 October 1986, an entire show was devoted to them, unheard of in a soap opera, but the impact was so great that EastEnders has repeated the concept over the years.

In this tour-de-force, Den and Angie's marriage is on the rocks. When Den tries to tell Angie that he's leaving her, she makes a last, desperate bid to keep him. She tells him that she has six months left to live.

The climax to this storyline was Den handing Angie a letter from his solicitor filing for divorce. He'd found out that her claim of only having six months to live was just a lie to keep them together. This was the dramatic end to the 1986 Christmas Day episode and it was watched by nearly 30 million people.

Who's The Daddy? - It's January 1988 and teenager Michelle is pregnant. She arranges to meet the (as yet unknown) father of her baby and in true whodunit style, we see a series of shots showing every male resident in Albert Square (like Tony Carpenter and cafe owner Ali Osman), going on errands. Who's the father? It could be any of them. However, a walk by the canal reveals that it's - shock! - Den Watts. "I never thought it would happen in a saloon bar under a picture of Queen Victoria," Michelle tells him. Meanwhile, a gobsmacked nation picks their jaws up from the floor.

" 'Ello mum!" - And with those words in October 2005, fans finally got what they wanted; the long-awaited return of Grant and Phil Mitchell to EastEnders. In truth, the episode itself was rather average thanks to the writers shamelessly dragging it out (who can honestly tell me that happened in the twenty-odd minutes preceding the return of the 'bruvvers'? Thought so). But the last two minutes? Electric. Thirteen million watched the hardmen roar back into Albert Square.

'Sharongate' - Grant's thuggish behaviour drove wife Sharon into the arms of his 'bruvver' Phil. She accidentally taped a confession of their affair (because we all do that, don't we?) and in October 1994, whilst Phil and Kathy's engagement party was in full swing inside the Queen Vic, Grant found out. He played Sharon's tape over the pub stereo and tempers flared. Kathy called Sharon a "slut" and slapped her and the Mitchell brothers had a classic fight with Grant beating Phil black and blue.

Wicksy, Cindy & Ian and David Wicks, Cindy & Ian - Where would EastEnders be without love triangles? These were good ones. Ian married scheming wench Cindy thinking that she was pregnant with his baby, but Simon Wicks was the real father. In 1990 Cindy confessed; she told Ian that she didn't love him and that Steven was not his son. Distraught, Ian crashed his van and ended up in hospital; Wicksy and Cindy left Walford with their little boy.

Years later, Ian took Cindy back and she returned to Albert Square in 1993. They had twins together, but the good times didn't last; Cindy did the dirty on Ian with Simon's brother David ('cos she likes to keep it in the family). In a memorable October 1996 storyline, Cindy eventually hired a hitman to kill Ian. He's shot, but survives. Cindy scarpers with the children. The ensuing custody battle came after Ian snatched the kids back from Italy. The court gave Cindy custody, but she was arrested and imprisoned. She died giving birth.

Little Mo Fights Back - Little Mo suffered beatings, mental torture, rape, kidnap and even attempted murder at the hands of evil husband Trevor Morgan. On New Year's Eve 2001, she finally fought back and hit him over the head with an iron. Unfortunately, Trevor survived, but Little Mo was sent to prison for her actions.

Janine Kills Barry (sort of) - Manipulative, cunning Janine Butcher married hapless Barry Evans for his money, but like a fool, he didn't see it. Matters came to a head on New Year's Day 2004; Janine broke Barry's heart by admitting her hatred of him and confessing to an affair with Paul Trueman. Then she (sort of) pushed him off a cliff...and all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put poor Barry together again.

Who Shot Phil? - Despite the fact that it was done bigger and better in the infamous 'Who Shot JR?' 1980 episode of 'Dallas', this EastEnders whodunit was a ratings winner. On the day of Steve Owen (played by Martin Kemp) and Mel's wedding in March 2001, Phil was shot by a mystery person and nemesis Steve was just one of many suspects. The tension mounted throughout the episode and at the end, Phil collapsed in Albert Square after being shot in the shoulder. The would-be assassin turned out to be the mother of his child; she shot him in revenge for treating her badly.

Kat & Alfie's Wedding - A classic will they/won't they couple (we've lost count of the amount of times their nearest and dearest pleaded with them to, "Sort it aaaaaaht!" ), the star-crossed lovers finally got hitched on Christmas Day 2003. They had to overcome many obstacles to get to the altar such as Alfie's secret love for her, Kat's engagement and near-marriage to gangster Andy Hunter. But true love conquered all and Kat was thrilled that her dream of a white wedding came true (thanks to Alfie's cousin Maxwell and his snow machine which covered Albert Square). Unfortunately, marriage wasn't smooth sailing either...

Den Dies...And Dies Again - February is not a good month for Dirty Den; he always kicks the bucket. Back in February 1989, Den's underworld past caught up with him. He decides to leave Walford, but not before meeting Michelle Fowler at the canal to tell her that he'll still look after their baby. They go their separate ways and Den is relieved to see a young couple, but the muzzle of a gun appears through a bunch of daffodils - and a shot is fired. We hear a 'plop' (no way is it a splash!). Den is presumed dead...

There's more than a touch of 'Dallas/Pam's dream' about Den's resurrection. It took 14 years, but he returned to explain his faked death, only to go through a real one a couple of years later. To mark the 20th anniversary in February 2005, Den was killed off - bludgeoned to death with a metal doorstop by his wife Chrissie. Millions of viewers watched as she dealt the killer blow during a fight at the Queen Vic...where else?
