Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus have come out in support of gay marriage in the wake of controversial comments by Miss California Carrie Prejean.

The US stars both showed their backing on their Twitter pages, with Britney tweeting: "Love is love!... People should be able to do whatever makes them happy!"

Celebrity blogger and contest judge Perez Hilton had asked Carrie during last weekend's Miss USA competition if she thought more US states should legalise same-sex marriage, and she replied that she thought marriage should be between a man and a woman.

Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus also weighed in to the debate on her Twitter page.

"Jesus loves you and your partner and wants you to know how much He cares!" she wrote.

"Like I said, everyone deserves to be happy.

"I am a Christian and I love you - gay or not," she added later.

"Because you are no different than anyone else! We are all God's children."
