The MTV Video Music Awards returned to Radio City Music Hall, New York last Sunday - where the first VMAs were held back in 1984. The star-studded event served partly as a tribute to Michael Jackson, with an opening speech from Madonna and a prominent performance by sister Janet both honouring the late singer. The awards list was led by Lady GaGa, Beyonce and Green Day, all accepting three awards each - with Lady GaGa being named the Best New Artist and Beyonce winning the coveted Video of the Year award.
Teenage country star Taylor Swift won the Best Female Video award. However, this achievement was somewhat overshadowed by the most controversial moment of the evening, a spontaneous speech from rapper Kanye West in which he condemned the decision not to give the award to Beyonce's Single Ladies.
