Lists. They're everywhere at this time of year. They appeal to some deep-seated human need to quantify and clarify, to make order out of chaos, to lend perspective to the 12 months just gone.
Of course, in the case of a 'best albums' list such as this, it can only ever be a matter of opinion. This in turn inevitably leads to disagreement, sometimes outrage, and, if previous years are anything to go by, several angry enquiries as to what gives me the right to decide which albums are the best anyway.
Just to clarify, the albums listed here do not constitute a personal top 12. Admittedly, I have sneaked in a couple of my favourites but generally speaking this list is the result of feedback received from colleagues, friends, music industry figures, and, most importantly, MSN users.
Of course, disagreeing is all part of the fun. We'd love to know which albums you think should have been here and which had no right at all. You can do that by leaving a post on the messageboard (link below). But hey, remember, it's only music. And it is Christmas.
