Top 40: The Best Movies of 2008

Burn After Reading (Image © Warner Bros Inc 2008)

We’ve had a fantastic time choosing the best movies of 2008, re-living a year of schizophrenic superheroes and lunatic oil barons, pregnant teenagers and mafia murderers.

2008 saw politics and history take centre stage at the multiplex, from the searing animations of Persepolis and Waltz With Bashir to the broad farce of Charlie Wilson’s War. It was a good year for horror too, with [REC] and Cloverfield showing just how far you could push the Blair Witch shakycam effect, while Eden Lake led a strong crop of British chillers. It was a year of really silly film titles, from the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull to Quantum of Solace, and best of all, it was the year the Coen Brothers got their balls back.

So, these are our top 40. But how was it for you? Have we got it spot on, or hopelessly wrong?
