Milk: MSN Review

Milk pairs indie film maverick Gus Van Sant and acting heavyweight Sean Penn to tell the true story of Harvey Milk - gay rights activist and America’s first homosexual elected official. It’s essentially a biopic but the film’s two leading talents combine to make it stand out from the workable, worthy examples that inevitably appear around awards season.

Unlike the liberal haven of today, seventies San Francisco was torn between the hippy idealism of the left and the religious right’s rampant conservatism. Into the fray enters Harvey Milk, a successful businessman with the unique ability to rally those within his community. His photography store becomes something of a gay headquarters and, after winning over the unions and witnessing one too many cases of unprovoked police brutality, the next step is obviously politics.

After three unsuccessful attempts and swathes of prejudice, Milk finally wins the vote and proceeds to use his newfound power to fight for gay rights. The first half of the film breathlessly portrays his rise to authority while the remainder details his challenges in the world of US politics. Though this leaves the pacing slightly uneven, the political challenges that face Milk in his later career are never less than enthralling, and the climax is so unexpected and shocking that it could only have happened in real life.

Penn gives a brilliant performance that is thankfully much more nuanced than his usual Oscar-worthy bids for glory. Long derided by some for playing it way too serious and straight (no pun intended), it’s refreshing to see him explore the playful, humorous side of Milk’s character - for once he actually seems to be having fun. Penn clearly still relishes the meatier sides of the role however, and Milk’s many political confrontations and rousing speeches give him the chance to do so.

The supporting cast is also on sterling form, particularly the ever-reliable Josh Brolin as Milk’s uptight and insecure fellow board member and James Franco as his on-off stoner boyfriend, but this is ultimately a character study expertly executed by Penn, who appears in almost every scene.

Director Van Sant meanwhile seems torn between filming a straightforward biopic and giving in to his artier impulses. His last four films have been as experimental as US cinema gets, but he has also previously flirted with the mainstream by directing the Oscar winning Good Will Hunting. Milk is a genuine mix of these two styles, meaning that dated home-movie footage and trademark shots of clouds sometimes sit uncomfortably next to straightforward courtroom sequences.

Still, the hands of a more mainstream director (Ron Howard for example) may have produced a typical and forgettable underdog movie, while if Van Sant had stuck to his art-cinema roots the incredible story may not have been given the gravitas it deserves. But the material has inherent strength of its own. Harvey Milk’s story is an important one that needs to be told. Any occasional inconsistencies in style can be forgiven as the talents of Penn and Van Sant combine to make Milk an engaging, powerful biopic, much deserving of any awards that may be coming its way soon.
four stars.
An adventurous and moving depiction - kudos to Penn and Van Sant.
